Tell us about yourself and what you’re up to in life.

Hello everyone!

My name is Zohaib and I am the Director of Design here at AssistList. I am based in beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia, and for my day job, I work as a Product Designer at a Saas company down south in the Bay Area. I’d like to think that I have always been a creative individual and it’s helped shape my life and my career too. I am a firm believer in creating inclusive products that foster enablement and widespread opportunity.

How did you hear about volunteering at AssistList?

I initially heard about AssistList back during the very early days of COVID-19. Everyone was holed up in their homes and had nothing to do. AssistList was looking for UX Designers and I had come across a posting and I said, “Hey, why not give this a try?”. I got to work and interact with a whole team of talented designers building new features and solutions to help our local community.

What is your current role at AssistList? What duties/responsibilities do you have and how long have you been volunteering for? (Feel free to mention previous roles if you’d like)

I currently serve on the board with four other wonderful board members. I am currently the Director of Design and oversee all things design from AssistList’s website’s user experience, to the branding, and more!

I have been volunteering for over four years now. I joined in early 2020 and started as a UX Designer, and then joined the branding team to help lead the organization’s rebranding efforts. Later in 2021, I became the Manager of the Design team where I chaired the Design Team Meetings. I also had the chance to run some design workshops and mentor up-and-coming designers. About a year ago, the leadership team asked me to join them on the board to bring some new perspective. It’s an absolute honour to serve with them and take AssistList forward.

What brings you joy about volunteering at AssistList?

What excited me about AssistList was its humble beginnings with just three individuals with an idea, and seeing how far it’s come. The impact that AssistList has on the local Greater Vancouver community is huge! We’ve established relations with numerous healthcare providers in BC, along with the local occupational therapists as well. AssistList is filling a gap in the healthcare system and our partners are glad that we are here.

On a personal level, I enjoy collaborating with volunteers from across all the different departments at AssistList and creating something that has a positive impact on the community. AssistList is more than just a charity, it’s a community that fosters inclusion and growth for our volunteers and its users.

Anything else you would like to share?

I grew up in sunny Los Angeles, California but I self Identify as a Canuck! I’m a big hockey guy and I am super excited that the Canucks are finally playoff bound again! Looking forward to seeing how they fair this time around.

In my spare time, I enjoy home improvement, cooking, video games, cinematography, and aviation. My favourite shows include Brooklyn 99 and The Office.

I recently got married which has been an exciting journey. My wife and I are now planning our honeymoon in Thailand!
